Designed: Spring 2000

Materials: 2 ‘candle-light’ chandelier bulbs, 2 ceramic sockets, 2 snake-light coils, various lengths of copper wire, several tin leaves, vacuum formed styrene shades, sculpted MDF base.

Challenge: To design a lamp with reference to ‘nature’

Solution: Drawing upon the literal forms of nature, Lamp Nouveau is a mood light that creates an interesting interplay between both light and shadow. The chandelier bulbs provide a warm orange glow within a space. Each bulb is shielded by a leaf-like sand blasted styrene shade, to both prevent direct exposure to the bulb itself and create subtle superimposed shadows. The copper wire and tin leaves aid in the overall literal nature aesthetic, while at the same time, add more obstacles for the light. The net result is an array of organic juxtaposed shadows projected onto the surrounding surfaces.
