Design Team: Ryan Majeau Designed: March/April 2002 Materials: MDF and Puckboard Challenge: To design a furniture system Solution: The idea was to create a system within the manufacturing process, not in the pieces themselves. The team designed a system around milling shapes from a 4x8’ template out of various materials. A combination of sturdy and flexible materials would result in the finished pieces. No hardware would be required as all joinery would be limited to slotting the flexible material through slots in the solid pieces with tabs preventing them from separating. For the purpose of this exercise we chose to focus on deck furniture, where tables, chairs and footrests were possible products in the series. The MDF and Puckboard suited this line. Other applications such as the office or the bedroom would utilize other materials, chosen for their aesthetics, price, durability, and overall quality.
