Designed: October 2001 Materials: Stool base from IKEA, seat comprised of fiberglass Challenge: To redesign a stool seat to be used with an existing stool’s base. Solution: When designing this seat, I wanted to incorporate a feeling of instability while never actually being unstable. The aesthetic of a melting seat, or of a “stack of surfaces slowly sliding off of the base” was the direction headed with this project. The seat design was achieved by creating a model and 3D digitizing it into computer space to create an actual full-scale model, which was then milled out of Styrofoam. Fiberglass was then applied to the mold. I didn’t want to limit the end finish to only one sort of look, and wanted to incorporate a principle of customization with each seat. This could be accomplished by sandwiching graphics of any sort between the layers of fiberglass during production. [back]
