Designed: March, 2001 Materials: 1” diameter steel tubing, hand-made rope Challenge: To design a stool using the above materials, where the rope functions as a structural element. Solution: When designing this stool, I wanted to create a tall stool with optional foot rests. Steel Stool can be sat on in forwards to have your legs dangle, or backwards to give yourself foot rests on the support bars. The look of this stool is very airy and organinc, and may seem a bit unstable to sit on with the seat attached on only one side. This is only an illusion as the welding is quite strong and there is no worries of it breaking. The rope acts as a structural element in that it alone is the seat, and also as a decorative element as it forms “X’s” at every weld. The overall finish was achieved by drumelling the entire structure to give a natural textured finish. This was then treated to prevent rust. [back]
