Designed: January/February 2001 Challenge: Design a playground using a choice of 3 four-letter words form a list Solution: Using the words ‘mind’, ‘body’, and ‘soul’, I wanted to create a large scale playground where the words weren’t obvious all the time. The word ‘Soul’ creates the main structure of the park, since out of the three words, soul is what makes the kids play the way they do. It comprises of slides, ladders, and ramps. ‘Body’ is less emphasized and serves as a smaller obstacle to climb through. It is positioned within ‘soul’. ‘Mind’ is also kind of separated and is a 3D maze. It’s noting difficult, you just walk through the letters, but the structure of it is made from double paned lexxan, so you can’t really see clearly what is outside, yet light can still show through. The top is open and there are various exit points throughout so no one can get trapped inside. The only way to see the word mind or soul is from above. Standing atop ‘soul’ allows you to see the word ‘mind’, but unless you’re in an airplane, the word ‘soul’ is unidentifiable. [back]
