Design Team: Ryan Majeau Designed: December 2001 Materials: Stainless Steel Sheets Challenge: To take the ‘guts’ of a cappuccino machine and redesign the outer shell so that it matches the aesthetic of an existing coffee shop. Solution: Designing for Block 1912, a coffee shop on Whyte Ave, (Address?), two styles seemed to be present: a clean, sleek, stainless steel working area where the food and coffee was prepared, and a traditional, abstract, symbolist ancient egyptish seating area. The design team attempted to merge these two styles in creating the Osiris. We took the symbolist aesthetic in choosing the Sphinx image from one of the paintings on the wall. We then modernized and abstracted the shape until it wasn’t too literal of a reference. We used stainless steel for the casing to match the countertops in the serving area, since that is where the machine would be placed. The result was kind of a ‘best of both worlds’ aesthetic. Large controls were placed on the front panel, and a large vent was added on the back for storing cups. Modeled and Rendered in Rhino3D
